The Red Strat

So this guitar has a little story attached to it. It came to life as part of the fifty quid Strat project - lovely properly contoured slightly smaller body of unknown pedigree and a lovely resonant solid neck - the parts just fitted and worked to become a well balanced and very playable guitar.

Now one day Ron showed up at the shed bearing his Mr K signature Strat - see earlier post "The Visitor" so we decided to put the two side by side. I happened to have a set of Texas Special Pickups knocking around in the Shed same as the ones on his - these were destined for another guitar but we dropped those in and played them one against the other. Sounded pretty similar and with a bit of setting up over a relaxed BBQ lunch, they surprisingly played around the same level. So we rummaged through the pickup box and came up with a set of what I think were Squier 20th Anniversary pickups that matched fairly well with the Texas Specials - they sounded pretty close and on they went.

We sat looking at them - on the left thousands of pounds (if not tens) worth of high end Fender Signature Guitar and on the right a lovely little fifty quid Red Strat knocked up in the shed - we are onto something we thought - taken purely as instruments, hard to justify the huge price differential, love and care and attention to detail is what can make even the cheapest instrument special.
